A Trip to the Catskills

The Spruceton Inn

A couple of my gorgeous friend, Casey Schezka (@sprucetoninn) and Steven Weinberg (@stevendraws) just opened a “Bed and Bar” in the Catskills of New York called the SPRUCETON INN.

On our way out of Brooklyn my sis, her girlfriend, and I made sure to pick up breakfast sandwiches a donuts at Peter Pans in Greenpoint.  Now this joint IS the donut shop, fast paced, in an out, cops in the corner, chocolate frosted, sugar twists, Bavarian Eclairs!

As highways gave way to pine forests, we decided to stop and do a little antiquing (as you do in upstate New York).  We walked into an enormous structure (vacated factory?), the smell of musty wood combined with rusted metal to lay thick upon the nose and palate (beware asthmatics). The picking was awesome though, rows upon rows of cast iron pans, ventilation grates of all colors and designs, sleds, toy cars, hutches and crutches (dumb rhyme).  I came away with a faded lantern that I thought would make a good little housewarming gift for my friends.

We pulled up to the SPRUCETON INN in the fading light of the late afternoon, clouds were settling in, hinting at a light shower on the way. The moment we exited the car, I could understand why New Yorkers would crave a getaway like this. Calm woods, gentle stream in the background, quiet.  You can’t help but feel the isolation (no internet or cell service helps with that as well).  The Inn was quaint and delightful.  Casey has an eye for creating a space that feels like home but equally lets you know that your experience is being curated.  Steven for his part, built some pretty bomb wooden doors and stools.

The front desk doubles as a bar where locals congregate on the weekends. There are 9 rooms, all with a queen size bed and a small kitchenette.  Steven's watercolors adorn the walls and a window reminds you of the forest that lies just an arm's length away.  Once again, they have done a wonderful job of creating a space where one feels the comforts of an inn, yet equally removed from the "comforts" of city dwelling. If you are looking for a delightful weekend away from the City, this is the place for you.

In the morning we were greeted with coffee and a friendly smile by their new assistant, Meagan. We decided to take advantage of the beautiful day and walked over to the nearby stream with Casey, Steven, and their mascot Waldo. Finally it was time to pack up and head back to Brooklyn, but not before stopping at the Phoenecia Diner for corned beef hash, eggs, and the best darn fried chicken and waffle sandwich we’ve ever had.
